The Esmeraldas region is the fifth poorest region in Ecuador with 41.6% of the population living on less than $85 a year. Families live from agricultural, aquaculture, and fishing sectors. In many processes, producers make use of polluting energies that are harmful to humans and the environment (e.g. gas for drying cocoa, or diesel for small shrimp farms), and this results in the widespread use of agrochemicals.
We promote financial inclusion when it comes to green energy for producers and their families. We believe that adopting green microfinance to farmer’s reality helps mitigate the effects of climate change and helps them increase productivity.
Such producers do not have the liquidity to invest in clean energy which generates a positive impact on their production and life. At CODESPA we help them analyzing their ventures, to get them in contact with clean energy providers, and to access microcredits that promote change in their crops.
Awareness of climate change
We raise producers’ awareness of the causes and consequences of climate change, seeking that they mitigate such effects on their daily activities, to adapt to the circumstances, and to reduce the risks.
Clean energy supplier search
We help producers to find suppliers that meet the needs of less polluting energy, both in quantity and quality, as well as green stamp consumptions for production. They must be able to offer safe energy and provide improved inputs (e.g. seeds, fertilizers) with greater resistance to weather conditions.
Access to microcredit
Once small entrepreneurs show interest in carrying out a process of energy transition or a change in the production model to make use of clean energy or green consumptions, financial products are defined to support this change.
We establish collaboration agreements with microfinance institutions and small rural producers so that they have access to “green microcredits” that allow them to invest in promoting clean energy in their ventures.
A comprehensive impact
50 producers adapt their agricultural ventures to the use of clean, sustainable, and responsible energy. This directly impacts their health, reduces pollution, and increases their competitiveness in the market.
